TARGET AUDIENCE: K-3 TEACHERS, COACHES, NUMERACY LEADS AND SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS ARE ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND.

Back by popular demand, we have our Division 1 Collaborative Community! Join us for 3 evenings of exploring, sharing, debriefing and learning more about math in Division 1. We have three current teachers joining us as our guides for these evenings. Jenn, Chelsey and Steph bring with them their classroom experiences and practical ideas as we look at what makes a student mathematically fluent.

Continuing with Visible Learning for Math as our research backdrop, we will look at:

The math content itself - bring your questions so you can dive in and become more confident with the math
Mathematical pedagogies - aligning teaching strategies with math topics and student needs
Literacy - how connections between math and literacy can support students
Flexible Thinking - connections with mathematical confidence and strategies

We look forward to chatting with you and being a part of your ongoing math growth as you continue to build your cross-jurisdictional math network during our evenings of learning and sharing.

Jenn Wentworth

has taught in Division 1 for 7 years. In math, she has been focusing on building a strong community of problem-solvers who are comfortable taking risks and are supportive of each other’s learning. A goal of Jenn’s this year is to establish a working math congress in which number talks and mathematical discussions are student-led, to allow students more ownership of their own learning. Some of Jenn’s greatest growth as a teacher has come from working with dedicated mentors and coaches, engaging in collaborative numeracy communities, taking risks in the classroom and employing trial-and error. Jenn believes that all kids are mathematicians – find out what they know, meet them where they are at, and give them the confidence to move themselves forward!

Chelsey Stuart

is currently a grade 3 teacher in Cochrane, Alberta. Chelsea began her career teaching grade 1 at an international school in China. After a year abroad, she returned to Alberta where she has been teaching in Rocky View School Division for the last 6 years. Chelsea has taught grades 1, 2 and 3 and has thoroughly enjoyed working with young learners. She believes that learning should be engaging and inspire creativity and critical thinking in children. Chelsey shared that her most valuable growth as an educator has been through collaboration and meaningful conversations with colleagues.

Stephanie Vincent

began her teaching career working with ELL learners in a kindergarten classroom in Calgary. For the past three years she has taught grade 1 in Cochrane, Alberta. When Stephanie first joined Rocky View School Division she was terrified of teaching math. As a result, Steph signed up for all of the professional learning that she could, hoping to survive her first year of grade 1. Instead, she fell in love with early numeracy! Collaborating with other passionate, motivated teachers has been Stephanie’s biggest inspiration and source of learning. Steph believes that the wonder and curiosity of our youngest learners makes them natural mathematicians, and she loves learning through play and inquiry within her classroom.
