TARGET AUDIENCE: TEACHERS AND SCHOOL/DISTRICT LEADERS NEW TO SUPPORTING ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS

Share and learn about best practices for supporting English Language Learners (ELLs) in the mainstream classroom. Ciara Smith, an ESL Consultant with Elk Island Catholic Schools, will take the lead in our ELL Collaborative Community this year. Join us and work with other Calgary and area educators to deepen your understanding of foundational components to supporting ELLs by exploring:

  • second language acquisition principles
  • the use of AB ESL Benchmarks to guide teaching practice
  • general strategies to support ELLs working at different proficiency levels
  • sample lessons that support ELLs in the mainstream class
  • celebrate the daily assessment practices that teachers already embed into their classroom practice, as a tool to inform the benchmark process

In addition to two in-person sessions with Ciara Smith, participants will engage in two interactive webinars as part their own going learning. During the interactive webinars, participates will blog to:

  • share resources and/or activities discussed in the previous in-person session
  • discuss success/'wins' they've experience with implementation
  • discuss challenges they've experience with implementation.

The webinars will be moderated by Cora-Leah Schmitt (Christ the Redeemer School District) and Kim Tackaberry.

This Collaborative Community is for classroom teachers as well as ELL Leaders in search of ways to support and engage their students and staff.Participants will come away with a rich set of tools, resources, and learning activities that you can use to target ELL instruction in a manageable way.

This learning opportunity is being offered through curriculum implementation funding from Alberta Education
